Randolph Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Overtime Stunner to Washington & Lee

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Parker Wolfinger scored his second goal of the season in overtime to push the Washington & Lee University Generals past the Randolph College men's soccer team 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Saturday from WildCat Stadium on Homecoming.

The goal came at 97:39 as Wolfinger played a ball to himself and got free inside the box. Sophomore keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) came out to challenge but the shot tucked underneath his grasp and gave the Generals (4-4-1/2-2-1 ODAC) the walk-off winner.

Just before the end of regulation and with the WildCats (8-3-0/1-3 ODAC) clinging to a 1-0 lead, a corner kick was given to Washington & Lee. Before the kick could be taken, Smith was carded and then during the corner sophomore back Will Wolf (Goldsboro, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) was whistled for a foul in the box. The yellow card was Wolf's second, leading to his dismissal from the game and resulting in a penalty kick for W&L.

Before the penalty could be taken, the referee carded another WildCat, this time talking captain Timmy Songer (Windsor, VA/Windsor). With 1:26 left in the game, the General's Conor Starr buried the PK to knot the score at one, sending the contest to the extra session.

Earlier in the proceedings, the WildCats took their lead thanks to a great shot from Songer. After being put in down the right sideline by sophomore central midfielder John Vecchietti (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson), he lined up a shot from the corner of the 18 and beat Ben Pettito for the strike.

Before that, the game was played mostly in the midfield, though Randolph held an early edge in shots and corner kicks. Those statistics would even out as the Generals started to apply pressure looking for the equalizer. W&L outshot its hosts 12-11, though the WildCats earned a slight 6-5 advantage in corners. Each keeper made two saves in the contest.

In another physical game, the WildCats and Generals combined for 31 fouls but the host 'Cats were doled out four yellow cards and two red cards. The red cards for the WildCats were their first since September 26, 2009 against Hampden-Sydney College, and were only their second and third ever in program history.

Smith and Wolf will now have to sit against Lynchburg College on Wednesday evening as the WildCats head across town to take on the Hornets at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
