LYNCHBURG, Va. - The WildCats kicked off the season at home against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College, in which the game ended in a draw, 1-1.
It was a back-and-forth contest for much of the first half until just around the 34-minute mark, when the 'Cats broke through Meredith's defense with a pass-up from
Bailey Richardson to
Ava Brandenburg to take a 1-0 lead. Randolph held on to their lead heading into halftime.
Both teams continued their defensive clinics, trading possessions to start the half. The Avenging Angels, looking to even the score, found their chance, slipping past the WildCats' defense to tie the game in the 67th minute.
As the minutes wound down, both teams were looking to seal the victory, but kept each other at bay.
Randolph had 22-7 in shots against Meredith, with 10 on goal. First-year goalkeeper
Kacie Walker tallied three saves on the night, and Meredith's keeper Delaney Thompson made nine saves.
Brandenburg had the lone goal for the WildCats.
Alina Fant led the team with six shots;
Casey Serttas had four shots with two on goal, followed by
Madison Booker with three shots, all on target. Richardson recorded an assist and three shots.
The team returns to WildCat Stadium on Friday at 5 p.m. against Pfeiffer.
