LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College softball team came up short in both games of Sunday's doubleheader against Lynchburg, falling 1-16 in game one before a more competitive 2-10 result in game two.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, Lynchburg broke through in the second with an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets then erupted in the third inning, plating nine runs on a combination of timely hitting and defensive miscues to extend their advantage to 10-0.
Randolph answered in the bottom half of the third.
Rachel Arce sparked the inning with a double, and pinch runner
Alexx Reinwald later came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by
Edie Jennings, cutting the deficit to 10-1.
Lynchburg continued to add on in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
The WildCats were limited to four hits on the day, with
Haili Gonzalez, Arce, Jennings, and
Calla Christian each recording one. Jennings accounted for Randolph's lone RBI.
Austyn Moran got the start in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings.
Delaney Sipes followed, tossing 2.1 innings, while
Savannah Cash recorded the final out.
Game Two
Lynchburg struck first in the opening inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The WildCats settled in defensively from there, keeping the deficit at one through the first three innings.
Randolph broke through in the fourth without recording a hit.
Brianne Slape came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher, tying the game at 1-1.
The Hornets responded in the fifth with a four-run inning to regain control. A two-RBI triple highlighted the frame before additional run-scoring hits pushed the lead to 5-1.
The WildCats answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Gonzalez led off with a triple and later scored on an RBI single from
Rylee Humble, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
Lynchburg added insurance runs in the sixth and then pulled away in the seventh with a four-run inning to secure the sweep.
Randolph totaled seven hits in the contest, led by
Kyndall Shapiro with a 2-for-4 performance. Gonzalez, Humble,
Chesney Shook,
Michaela Williams, and
Sammie Carroll each added a hit.
Humble went the distance in the circle, tossing all seven innings while striking out one.
The WildCats are back on the road to Guilford on April 8 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
