BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Randolph College softball team dropped the opening game of a doubleheader to Southern Virginia University, 12-1 in five innings, but bounced back in game two to win 3-2 in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon.
Randolph wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning.
Laura Herzig led off the game with a single and later came around to score when
Rylee Humble delivered an RBI single up the middle to give the WildCats an early 1-0 lead.
The WildCats finished the game with five hits at the plate. Humble paced the offense with a 2-for-2 performance and the team's lone RBI. Herzig,
Kyndall Shapiro, and
Amanda Lawhorn each added a hit.
In the circle, Humble started for Randolph and recorded a strikeout over 2.1 innings of work.
Delaney Sipes came on in relief and settled things down for the WildCats, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits.
The WildCats responded in game two with a strong pitching performance and timely hitting.
Southern Virginia struck first in the fourth inning on a sacrifice bunt that brought home a run to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Randolph broke through in the sixth inning when Herzig reached base and later scored when
Haili Gonzalez put the ball in play and reached on a fielder's choice, with an error allowing Herzig to cross the plate and tie the game.
The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning when Gonzalez came through with a clutch RBI double to left field that scored Herzig to give Randolph a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning,
Calla Christian added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to bring Gonzalez home and push the advantage to 3-1.
The Knights managed to plate a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Sipes closed the door to secure the victory.
Sipes was outstanding in the circle for Randolph, tossing a complete eight-inning game. She allowed just six hits and two runs while walking two in the winning effort.
Offensively, Gonzalez led the WildCats with two hits, including the go-ahead RBI double. Herzig scored twice and added a triple, while Lawhorn,
Sammie Carroll,
Alexx Reinwald, and Humble each recorded a hit.
The WildCats are back home on March 18 to face No. 17 Christopher Newport at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
