LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Randolph WildCats women's volleyball team made the short trip across town to take on conference and crosstown rival Lynchburg on Friday evening. Randolph came out swinging early, but the host Hornets proved too much to handle, taking the match in four sets, 22-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-15.
After claiming the opening set, the 'Cats struggled to maintain their momentum against the nationally recognized Hornets. Randolph jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead in the third set before Lynchburg's offense found its rhythm and began to pull away. The WildCats continued to battle in the fourth, but were unable to overcome an early deficit as the Hornets closed out the match.
Destanie Ambers led Randolph with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Makayla Waiters recorded two service aces and posted a team-best .400 hitting percentage. Ava Berger and Carly Schopp reached double figures in assists, finishing with 16 and 12, respectively. McKayla Padgett paced the WildCats defensively with 15 digs.
With the loss, Randolph falls to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in ODAC play. The late-season gauntlet continues Saturday, Oct. 17, as the WildCats travel to Bridgewater for a tri-match against No. 23 Bridgewater and Stevens. First serve against Bridgewater is scheduled for 11 a.m.
