LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College women's basketball team hosted nationally-ranked #6 Washington & Lee University in its first ODAC game of the new year. The WildCats fell to the Generals 43-66.
The Generals got on the board early with a jumper and followed that up with a layup to lead 4-0 to start the first quarter.
Maddie Pabon got the layup to put the WildCats on the board. The Generals responded with a layup to extend their lead, but
Brooklyn Finnerty got a layup and one to put the 'Cats down one with 5:54 to go. It was a 13-4 run for the Generals to close out the opening quarter and to lead 19-9.Â
Washington & Lee opened up the second with a 10-0 start to lead 29-9 about halfway through.
Sophia Stevens ended the run with a layup. A steal from
Taniya Jackson led to a fastbreak three-pointer from Stevens to put the score at 29-14. The WildCats then went on a 9-0 run to close within 10 points with 1:45 remaining. However, the Generals responded with a 5-1 run to go into halftime.
Out of the half, there was a 2-minute scoring drought for both teams. It ended with a made free throw by
Makiah Scott. However, the third quarter belonged to the Generals, outscoring the WildCats 20-10 to lead 54-31. A slow start to begin the fourth until a layup from the Generals ended it. Pabon netted a pair of free throws to put the score 56-33, but a quick layup from the Generals extended their lead. As the minutes wound down, the WildCats pushed with a 10-8 run, but it was not enough as the Generals took the 66-43 win.
Jackson led the team with 10Â points and added four rebounds, and Stevens finished with 7 points and four rebounds.Â
Randolph is on the road to Randolph-Macon on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
