SALEM, Va. - The Randolph College women's basketball team went to Roanoke for a Friday afternoon ODAC game. The WildCats fell 40-50 to the Maroons.
The 'Cats took a 2-0 lead early with a jumper from
Makiah Scott, and then the Maroons responded with a layup to even up the score. Randolph took the lead with a free throw made by Lexi Oge. However, Roanoke went on a 7-0 run to lead 9-3 with 3:25 to go.
Jaellen Hillery ended the run with a made layup assisted by
Amaya Thrash, but the Maroons knocked down a three on the other end to extend their lead to 12-5 and close out the quarter.
The Maroons opened up the second quarter with an early layup and three-pointer to lead 17-5. The team traded points back and forth, but the Maroons were hot from behind the line, as they led 24-9 with 4:27 to go. However, the WildCats responded with an 8-4 run to close the half; Roanoke led 28-14.
Randolph found an offensive push coming out of the half, outscoring the Maroons 10-7. Roanoke opened the quarter 3-0 to extend the lead 31-17. However, with just over five minutes to go, the WildCats went on a 10-4 run with buckets inside the paint and at the charity stripe to close within eight points, 35-27.
The final quarter started off with defensive pressure by both teams, with the first made basket coming from
Sophia Stevens' free throw at 7:41. The Maroons got on the board with a layup just over a minute later. The offense for the Maroons started picking up with a 7-3 run as the minutes wound down with 2:07 left. Out of the timeout, the 'Cats went on a 7-2 run to be down 38-46, but it was not enough as the Maroons got to the line to win 50-40.
Stevens led with a season-high of 19 points while also grabbing eight rebounds. Hillery chipped in eight points, and Scott and
Pariz Minor each added four points while Minor pulled down seven rebounds.
Randolph is back at Michels Athletic Center for a home contest against Averett on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
