LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College women's basketball team took on the Cougars of Averett University at home on Wednesday night. The WildCats cruised to a 73-50 victory over the Cougars.
The game opened with a three-pointer from the Cougars 30-seconds into the game. The WildCats saw their first bucket come out 7:28 with a layup from
Pariz Minor. The game continued with both teams trading points back-and-forth with the largest lead being five with seven seconds left in the quarter with Randolph leading 16-11, and a last second shot by Averett to narrow the lead to three 16-13.
The second quarter was much like the first. Both teams' offense stayed hot. The Cougars took a 22-19 lead at 6:39 after a three point basket, but a made free throw from Minor and three-pointer from
Sophia Stevens put the 'Cats back up 23-22. At the end of the half, the WildCats led 32-26.
Out of the half, the WildCats controlled the third quarter with a strong offensive push, outscoring the Cougars 26-15. Three-pointers from
Jaellen Hillery and
Maddie Pabon, along with inside buckets from
Makiah Scott and
Taniya Jackson. Late in the period, Randolph took a 19-point advantage to head into the fourth quarter with a commanding 58-41 lead.
Randolph maintained control throughout the fourth quarter, opening the period with defensive pressure and steady free-throw shooting from
Taniya Jackson to push the lead back to 19. Averett attempted to chip away behind made baskets but the Wildcats answered with timely scoring from Hillery, Scott, and Minor. A late three-pointer from
Amaya Thrash capped the quarter as the 'Cats continued to capitalize on turnovers and fast-break chances, closing out the game with a 73-50 victory.
Scott led the team with a season-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, adding five rebounds, four assists, and two steals off the bench. Minor followed with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Pabon also chipped in 11 points, knocking down 3 three-pointers. Stevens added nine points, three assists, and four steals and Hillery contributed eight points and two steals.
The team finished with 37 bench points, 17 steals, 17 assists, while forcing 25 turnovers and converting them into 31 points.
The team is back on home court for We Back Pat night as Virginia Wesleyan comes to town on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
