Women's Basketball Holds Off EMU for First ODAC Win, 76-68

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Randolph College women's basketball team went up to Eastern Mennonite for a midweek road contest. The WildCats held off EMU to get their first conference win, 76-68.

The WildCats got on the board after a pair of free throws from Pariz Minor to lead 2-0. Sophia Stevens followed that up with a driving layup to extend their lead. The Royals got on the board after a made layup. Both teams continued to trade points for the next two minutes until Randolph went on a 12-6 run to lead 20-11 with just over two minutes to go. The quarter closed with both teams adding two points to their total. Randolph leading 22-13.

Eastern Mennonite had a momentum shift in the second quarter as they outscored the WildCats 16-15. The Royals went on a 9-4 run in the first five minutes of the quarter to be back within four, 26-22. The WildCats responded with a layup from Brooklyn Finnerty, and the Royals turned around with a jumper and a made free throw to get within three with 4:33 remaining. However, the WildCats stayed poised and went on a 9-4 run to close the first half, leading 37-29.

The WildCats continued their offensive pressure in the third quarter, but the Royals were not backing down. The scoring opened with both teams getting points on the board and continued with points being traded back-and-forth. The largest lead for the WildCats in the quarter was 14 after Jaellen Hillery converted on a pair of free throws at the 3:22 mark. The quarter ended with the WildCats leading 57-44.

Randolph started the final quarter quickly with a layup from Minor. Then it was a scoring drought for both teams for the next two minutes. The Royals broke the drought with a made free throw, but Minor found a bucket to maintain their lead. The game continued with offensive pressure from both teams. With under three minutes to go, the Royals' momentum shifted with a 12-2 run to put the game within single digits. Out of the timeout with 40 seconds to go, the WildCats maintained their lead, and the defense held strong to get the win.

Minor led the team with her second double-double of the season, with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Sophia Stevens added 16 points for her sixth double-digit point game this season. Taniya Jackson was the third WildCat with a double-digit game with 13 points. Hillery chipped in eight points with five assists, and Makiah Scott added six points.

The team is back home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Guilford for an ODAC match-up.
