LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball team hosted St. Mary's College of Maryland on Tuesday evening at Giles Gymnasium. The Wildcats led 2-0 in the match only to see the Seahawks come back and tie the match up but the 'Cats came away victors in the end as they won 3-2.
The WildCats came out with an 11-5 lead in the first set and saw the lead grow to 15-10 and then 19-13. The Seahawks closed to 19-15 but the 'Cats ended the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-16.
St. Mary's had an early 4-2 advantage in the second set but the WildCats countered with a 7-2 run to lead 9-6. The Seahawks tied it at 9-9 but Randolph pushed ahead with a 7-2 run to go up 15-10. Holding a three-point lead at 16-13, a 9-2 run by the WildCats, including the last three points, gave them a 25-15 set win.
The Seahawks got out in front of the WildCats 7-2 in the third set. Their lead grew to eight points at 19-11. Randolph tried to chip away at its deficit but St. Mary's was too much in the end as they won 25-16.
St. Mary's again got out to an early lead in the fourth frame. Randolph briefly held an 8-7 advantage and after losing it, came back to go up 13-10. The 'Cats had their last lead at 15-13 as the Seahawks ripped off a 6-0 run to go up 19-15. The WildCats closed to within a point but St. Mary's went on a 5-0 run to hold off Randolph and win 25-19 to force a deciding set.
Randolph was ahead 6-5 in the fifth set and surrendered it briefly to the Seahawks as they went up 7-6. The WildCats then started to pull away with a 6-1 run to go up 12-8. St Mary's twice got to within two points of tying but at 14-12, Jamie Galinis' (Greenville, N.C./DH Conley) kill gave Randolph the winning point as it claimed the match.
Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) led with 13 kills and a .462 hitting percentage on the night. Kelsey Bowler (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) added 11 kills and five digs and three service aces. Kailee Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) tallied 31 assists, five service aces, and six digs. Abby Maldonado (High Point, N.C./Penn-Griffin SOTA) led in digs with 15. Caroline Towle (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) had a team-high six services that tied a season-high to go with nine digs and five kills.
Randolph is home this coming Saturday as it hosts Pitt-Bradford. Match time is at 11:00 a.m.
