LYNCHBURG, VA.- The Randolph women's volleyball team hosted cross-city rival the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night at Giles Gymnasium. The Hornets defeated the WildCats in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-18).
Randolph's overall record drops to 4-7 and 0-2 in the ODAC. The Hornets, who received votes in the latest AVCA national poll, improve to 11-1 and 1-0 in the conference.
The Hornets started the first set on a 5-0 run. Trailing 10-5, the WildCats closed to within a point at 10-9. It was a 13-11 score in Lynchburg's favor and the visitors used a 6-0 to break the set open and lead 19-11. The Hornets went on to win the set 25-15.
In the second set, Randolph led 3-1 but the Hornets used a 6-0 run to go up 7-3. The WildCats moved to within point at 7-6. Lynchburg went on a 14-4 run to go ahead 21-10 and then 24-13. The 'Cats used a 6-0 run to make it 24-19 but a service error on Caroline Towle (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) gave Lynchburg the point it need to win the set.
In the third frame, there with three ties early on. At 8-8, Lynchburg broke away with a 7-3 run to go up 16-10. Randolph fought its way back to bring the score to 18-15. The Hornets ended the set on a 7-3 run to win 25-18.
Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) and Kelsey Bowler (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) both had six kills to lead the WildCats. Kailee Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) totaled 16 assists. Abby Maldonado (High Point, N.C./Penn-Griffin SOTA) led in digs with 10.
Randolph hosts #6 Washington and Lee in another ODAC match this Friday. The match will start at 6:30 p.m.
