RALEIGH, N.C. — The Randolph softball team played Marymount and Oberlin in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic on Saturday. Randolph jumped out to an early lead, but a big fourth inning from Marymount proved to be the difference as the WildCats fell 3-11. In the second game, the team fell to Oberlin 4-5, despite a late-game push.
The WildCats (0-8) struck first in the opening inning when
Desiree Scott delivered a two-run double to left field, bringing home
Riley Shupe and
Laura Herzig for the early 2-0 advantage. However, Marymount (3-5) responded in the bottom half of the inning, plating three runs to take the lead.
The Saints extended their lead in the third with an RBI groundout. The WildCats cut into the lead in the fourth inning as Herzig scored on a wild pitch, making it a 4-3 game.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Saints broke the game open, capitalizing on a series of hits to push across seven runs and take an 11-3 lead.
Shupe led Randolph at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored a stolen base. Herzig also had a strong performance, scoring twice while adding a hit and two stolen bases. Scott's two-run double was the WildCats' lone extra-base hit of the contest.
In the circle,
Austyn Moran allowed four runs on six hits over two innings.
Hailey Metzger and
Rylee Humble combined in relief, with Metzger tossing 1.2 innings and Humble closing out the game.
In the second contest, Oberlin (1-3) got on the board first in the opening inning, plating an unearned run on a sacrifice bunt. The WildCats answered in the bottom of the second when
Zoe Watson roped an RBI double to right center, bringing in
Lacey Lucado to even the score at 1-1.
The Yeowomen pulled ahead in the third inning off a three-run surge to extend Oberlin's lead to 5-1. The 'Cats rallied in the bottom of the fifth with Herzig's RBI triple to right center that brought home
Sammie Carroll. Shupe, then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Herzig to cut the deficit. A throwing error on a groundout allowed Shupe to cross home plate to bring the WildCats within one at 4-5.
Herzig led the offense with a triple and an RBI, while Shupe and Martz drove in a run. Watson added two hits, including a double and an RBI.
Despite keeping Oberlin off the board in the final two innings, the WildCats could find the tying run.
Paige Scruggs allowed one run over four innings. Humble started the game, surrendering three earned runs on three hits in three innings.
The 'Cats continue their run in the Triangle Classic, tomorrow, Sunday, when they face Muhlenberg at noon and N.C. Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
