RALEIGH, N.C. — The Randolph softball team opened its Sunday slate at the Triangle Classic against Muhlenberg, The WildCats were shut out 0-8 to the Mules. In the second game, they faced N.C. Wesleyan, and mounted a late rally in the fifth inning but fell 5-15.
Muhlenberg got on the board early in the first innings to take a four-run lead in the bottom of the first before adding three more runs in the second. A final run in the sixth sealed the run-rule victory.
The WildCats totaled five hits in the game, led by
Riley Shupe, who went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Rylee Humble,
Kaitlyn Wills, and
Chesney Shook each added a hit, while
Desiree Scott and
Lacey Lucado worked walks to reach base.
Paige Scruggs pitched 4.1 innings while allowing 11 hits and seven runs.
Austyn Moran provided relief, pitching 1.0 inning, giving up three hits and one run.
In the second game, the Battling Bishops (7-7) jumped out to a fast start, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding eight more over the next two frames to take a 12-0 lead. Randolph (0-10) plated five runs in the fifth inning to avoid the shutout.
Michaela Williams got the offense going with a leadoff walk before
Bethany Martz put the WildCats on the board with an RBI double.
Zoe Watson and
Addie Bowen each drove in runs to cap off the inning.
Sammie Carroll went 1-for-1 with a walk. Martz contributed two hits, driving in one run. Scruggs had a double and an RBI. Watson added a hit and an RBI, while Bowen also had a hit and an RBI.
Aubree Bass got the start in the circle. She allowed four runs on one hit and struck out two in just 0.2 innings.
Hailey Metzger entered in surrendering four runs on five hits over 1.1 innings. Humble took over the final three frames, giving up seven runs on nine hits while recording one strikeout.
The 'Cats are back on the road to Maryville on Wednesday for a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m.
