LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team hosted first place Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night at Giles Gymnasium. Both teams played to four sets as the Yellow Jackets won by the score of 3-1 (19-25, 20-25, 27-26, 19-25).
The Yellow Jackets started off strongly in the first set as they got out to a 5-0 lead that turned into a 10-2 advantage. A 6-0 run for the WildCats, though, brought the score to 10-8. With the score at 12-10, the 'Jackets used a 5-0 run to go up 17-10. The lead grew to 21-12 and 24-15, The 'Cats were able to close to five points at 24-19 but a service error by Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands Kennemer College) gave RMC the point it needed to take the set.
Randolph took the first point of the second set. Randolph-Macon would go on to lead 5-2 with the advantage growing to 13-8. The teams would trade off points. The WildCats closed to within three points at 20-17. The Yellow Jackets continued to push ahead as they went on to win the set 25-20.
The WildCats led 8-4 in the third set. The Yellow Jackets rallied to tie it up at 8-8. The two teams would exchange leads back and forth. Randolph-Macon led 24-22 but the WildCats would tie at 24-24 and eventually outscored the Jackets 5-1 to claim the set 27-25.
Randolph started off strong in the fourth set as it got out to a 4-1 and 6-2 lead. The Jackets came back to go ahead 9-7. The lead grew to 14-9. Randolph-Macon maintained a five-point lead but Randolph closed its deficit to one point at 19-18. In the end, however, Randolph-Macon 6-1 run closed out the WildCats and gave the Jackets the set and match win.
Beentjes and Elijah Woods (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) both finished with 10 kills while Woods tallied 10 digs and Beentjes eight digs. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) had 27 assists.
Randolph returns to Giles Gymnasium next Wednesday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan. The match begins at 6:00 p.m.
