STAUNTON, Va. - The Randolph softball team put up a strong effort on the road against Mary Baldwin. In game one, the WildCats fell short in a 2-3 loss and in game two also fell 2-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The WildCats (1-13) struck first in the opening inning when
Zoe Watson delivered an RBI single to bring home
Riley Shupe, giving Randolph an early 1-0 lead. The game remained a pitching duel through the middle innings, with starting pitcher
Paige Scruggs holding the Fighting Squirrels scoreless throughout four innings.
Mary Baldwin (11-5) broke through in the fifth, tying the game 1-1. Randolph responded in the sixth as
Laura Herzig drove in
Addie Bowen on a groundout to reclaim the lead, 2-1. However, the Fighting Squirrels rallied in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to secure the win.
Randolph recorded 10 hits in the game. Herzig went 2-of-4 with an RBI. Watson was 2-of-4 as well with an RBI. Shupe had two hits and one run.
The pitching effort held Mary Baldwin to just six hits and three runs. Scruggs in four innings allowed just one hit and no runs.
Hailey Metzger took over in the fifth and worked two innings, surrendering four hits and two runs but had two strikeouts.
Austyn Moran allowed one unearned run on one hit.
Game two started with four scoreless innings, but it was the WildCats in the fifth to end the drought.
Lacey Lucado doubled and later scored on an RBI single by
Bethany Martz to give Randolph the lead. However, Mary Baldwin responded in the bottom half, plating three runs.
The deficit was cut to one in the sixth inning as
Sammie Carroll came around to score on a sac fly by Lucado, but the WildCats were unable to push across the tying run in the final frame.
Desiree Scott led Randolph at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, while Martz also recorded a pair of hits and an RBI.
Rylee Humble pitched five innings while allowing three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
Aubree Bass came in as relief, tossing a scoreless inning with three strikeouts.
The 'Cats return to Lynchburg, Va. on Wednesday for a home doubleheader against the University of Mary Washington at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
