ALTOONA, PA.- The Randolph men's volleyball team traveled to Central Pennsylvania on Friday as the WildCats faced Penn State Altoona. The Lions took the opening set but the 'Cats claimed the next three as they came away with a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22).
The win snaps a five-match winless streak for Randolph. The WildCats improve to 2-6 on the season.
The Lions led 4-0 in the first set. The lead grew to 11-6 but the WildCats rallied to close to within a point at 12-11. Penn State Altoona continued to push ahead on its way to a 25-19 set win.
Trailing 2-0 to begin the second set, the 'Cats would go on a 6-1 run to take a 6-3 lead. The Lions tied the set up at 6-all and then went up 10-9. Randolph fought back with an 8-2 run to go ahead 17-12. The WildCats led for the remainder of the frame as they knotted the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 victory.
After dropping the first point of the third set, the WildCats went on a 10-3 run to lead 10-4. Randolph continued to expand its advantage for the remainder of the frame as they won 25-19.
Randolph had a strong start to the fourth set as it led 12-6. The Lions clawed their way back with a 6-0 run to knot the frame at 12-12. The WildCats pushed ahead with a 4-0 run to lead 16-12. PSU-Altoona was right on the 'Cats tail as it pulled to within one point at 22-21. Randolph outscored the Lions 3-1 and won the match on a Lion attack error.
Elijah Woods (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory HS) had a double-double effort for the WildCats as he led the team with 15 kills and 14 digs. Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands/Kennemer College) tallied 11 kills and eight digs. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) also had a double-double performance with a team-high 38 assists and 10 digs. Zachary Septoff (Cumberland, Md.) had seven block assists.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. Randolph will then face Gallaudet afterwards at 11:00 a.m.
