LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College women's basketball team hosted Gallaudet University for a Monday afternoon game. The WildCats pulled away for an 84-58 win to improve to 5-4 on the season.
In the opening quarter the Bison took an early 4-0 lead over the WildCats.
Pariz Minor got Randolph on the board with a jumper. The Bison extended their lead with a three-pointer however the 'Cats responded with a three-pointer from
Maddie Pabon of their own stay within two. Then another three from the Bison prompted another three from Pabon. Gallaudet leads 10-8 with 7:24 to go.
Talia Edmond tied the game 10-10 off an assist from
Sophia Stevens. It was a scoring drought for a minute for both teams. At 5:46, the Bison knocked down a three-pointer to put them up but Pabon was hot from three again to tie the game once more. It was a back-and-forth battle as the quarter was closing. The quarter ended with the game tied at 23-23.
The second was all Randolph as the WildCats outscore the Bison 16-9. The first basket was scored by Stevens on a converted free throw to start a 12-0 run for the 'Cats. The Bison finally got on the board from behind-the-arc. The Bison then went on 6-4 run to trail 32-29 to the WildCats. Randolph dominated the third quarter as well, scoring 24-10 over Gallaudet to maintain a 63-42 lead.
The final quarter saw Gallaudet fight back. Stevens got the 'Cats on the board with a fastbreak jumper to extend the lead and the Bison responded with a jumper of their own. Then a 9-0 run for Randolph pushed the lead by 30 points, 74-44. Gallaudet also went on 6-0 run to try to trim into the deficit. With 4:04 to go on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 20, but that was the last bit of gas in the tank for the Bison. Randolph closed out the game with back-to-back three pointers from
Imogen Rawls both assisted by
Taniya Jackson.
The WildCats showed balance throughout the line up, with nine players scoring and 21 total assists. Stevens led Randolph with 26 points, adding six assists, three steals, and on block. Edmond was perfect from the floor going 5-for-5 for 10 points with five rebounds.
Brooklyn Finnerty also added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Minor had nine points, six rebounds; Jackson had nine points, five rebounds, and three steals and
Jaellen Hillery added eight points.
The team is back on home court on Thursday as they host Regent University at 2 p.m.
