LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College women's basketball team closed out the year with a 71-46 win over Regent in the Frances and Don Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats pulled away early and never looked back, outsourcing the Royals in every quarter.
The Royals got on the board first, knocking down from three. A minute later,
Taniya Jackson got the 'Cats on the board with a jumper off a steal and an assist by
Maddie Pabon. Both teams entered a two minute scoring drought until the Royals hit a jumper with 6:01 to go.
Pariz Minor brought the score within one on a layup assisted by
Makiah Scott. Then the WildCat offense got hot and went on a 14-2 run to close out the first quarter. Randolph was leading 18-7.
It was a back-and-forth scoring in the second quarter as Randolph only outscored Regent 21-20. At the end of the quarter, Randolph maintained their lead 39-27.
Once again, it was just about an evenly scored quarter with the WildCats outscoring the Royals 13-12. The Royals got on the board with a jumper and three to put them down only seven at 8:53 in the third quarter, but Jackson responded with a layup to maintain their lead. Scoring continued for both teams as the 'Cats led 52-39 heading into the fourth.
It was all Randolph in the fourth quarter, holding Regent to only seven points to its 19 points to seal a commanding victory of 71-46.
Pabon led the team with 16 points, adding five rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Jackson followed with 14 points and three assists, while Lexi Oge contributed nine points and eight rebounds. Randolph's depth proved effective, as the bench accounted for 23 points, led by
Amaya Thrash (7 points) and Minor (6 points).
The WildCats forced 35 Regent turnovers and capitalized with 36 points off turnovers, while also holding a 40–22 edge in points in the paint. Randolph improved to 6-4 overall on the season with the win.
The team is back home in the new year on Jan. 3 as they host Johnson & Wales (N.C.) at 2 p.m.
