LYNCHBURG, VA.- The Randolph women's volleyball team hosted its final game of the season on Saturday afternoon as they faced Eastern Mennonite. It was a hard-fought match between both teams but the visiting Royals came out on top in the end 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23).
EMU got out to a 3-1 lead to begin the first set but the WildCats rallied with a five-point burst to lead 5-3. Randolph's lead grew to 10-6 as the WildCats tried to extend their advantage over the Royals. The 'Cats had a 15-10 advantage but EMU was able to close to within a point at 15-14. Randolph still had a two-point lead at 19-17 but Eastern Mennonite's 8-0 run to end the set gave it a 25-19 win.
EMU took its momentum from the end of the first set into the second as the Royals started out 4-0 and then 5-1. Randolph recovered to tie the frame up at 5-5. Eastern Mennonite pushed ahead to lead 10-6 but again the WildCats would even the set. EMU used an 8-4 run to go ahead 18-14. Randolph picked away at its deficit as it would trail 23-21 but the Royals picked up the last two points of the set to win 25-21.
In the third set, Randolph led 1-0 after a kill by Tatianna Langston (Carrollton, Va./Smithfield). Eastern Mennonite followed with a 5-0 run but the WildCats went on a 6-1 run to lead 7-6. EMU grabbed the lead back but Randolph was able to tie the set twice at 9-9 and 10-10. The Royals pushed ahead 16-12 and then 19-15. The 'Cats came back to tie at 19-19, 20-20, and 21-21. EMU got to match point at 24-21 but kills by Jaelle Hinkle (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield HS) and Kelsey Bowler (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) let the WildCats pull to within one at 24-23 until Jada Parker's kills ended the match for the Royals.
Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) led Randolph with nine kills and hit .500 on the afternoon. Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) added six kills and 11 digs. Abby Maldonado (High Point, N.C./Penn-Griffin SOTA) had a team-high 17 digs. Kailee Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) finished with 26 assists.
The WildCats travel to Virginia Wesleyan for their final regular season ODAC match. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
