LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team hosted Guilford on Wednesday evening at WildCat Stadium. The WildCats scored twice in the first half and made it hold up in the end as they defeated the Quakers 2-1.
Randolph's overall record improves to 5-8-3 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC. Guilford drops to 3-11-2 overall and 0-6-2 in the conference.
The WildCats took the lead less than three minutes into the first half as
Eyoel Samuel (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) assisted
Corey Williams (Lynchburg, Va./Appomattox County HS) on the goal. Later in the 35
th minute, a foul on the Quakers in the penalty area granted Randolph a penalty kick that
Marcus Cortes (Annandale, Va./Annandale HS) was able to convert to give the WildCats a 2-0 lead. The teams were even in total shots 5-5 in the period.
In the second half, Guilford was held scoreless until the 58
th minute when Randolph was called for a foul in the penalty area that gave the Quakers a penalty kick goal. Chris Hercules scored for GC to make it 2-1. Guilford hoped to look for an equalizer but a pair of shots went wide left and
Dominic Cortes (Annandale, Va./Annadale HS) was able to make two saves late the second half to preserve the WildCat win.
Guilford led in overall shots 13-8 and in shots on goal 7-4. Corner kicks were also in the Quakers' favor 6-4.
Dominic Cortes finished with six saves for Randolph in the net. Ildis Vital-Peraza stopped two shots for the Quakers.
The WildCats host their regular season home finale this Saturday as they welcome Randolph-Macon to campus. Game time will be at 6:00 p.m.
