SPRINGFIELD, OH.- The Randolph men's volleyball team played two matches on the second day of the Jim Coleman Memorial Invitational hosted by Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon. In the first match, the WildCats fell to Edgewood 3-2 (25-22, 26-28, 22-25, 25-23, 13-15).
In the first set, both teams fought for the lead as it went back and forth. The WildCats led nearly wire-to-wire as it won 25-22 to take an early 1-0 lead.
Randolph also had a lead in the second set. The 'Cats were ahead 24-21 and looked to go up 2-0 in the match. The Eagles went on a 7-2 run to end the frame and it won 28-26 to even the match up at 1-1.
Trailing 5-3 in the third set, the WildCats went on a 15-2 run to take a big 18-7 lead at one point scoring 10 straight points. Randolph led 19-8 but Edgewood countered with a big run of its own as its' 17-3 run to end the set gave the Eagles a 25-22 win.
The 'Cats started the fourth set on a 6-0 run. The Eagles countered and closed to within two points at 20-18. Edgewood was able to tie the set at 23-23. A kill by Ahmed Diallo (Aurora, Colo./Overland HS) and an error on Edgewood's Owen Voigt gave Randolph the last two points it needed to take the set 25-23 and forced a deciding fifth set.
Randolph had leads of 11-9 and 13-12 in the final set. The Eagles, however, tallied three straight points to end the frame and win 15-13 to take the match.
Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands Kennemer College) led with 13 kills and also had nine digs. Diallo added 10 kills and hit .769 in the match. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) totaled 33 assists and seven digs. Zachary Elbert (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS) led in digs with 15 and Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.) chipped in 12 digs.
Against the Duhawks, Randolph led 8-7 in the first set. Loras countered with a 10-3 run to lead 17-11. The WildCats got to 22-15 but Loras scored three straight points to claim the set.
The WildCats led 12-7 in the second set but the Duhawks used a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-12. The 'Cats tied the match twice at 14-14 and 15-15 but could never overtake Loras as the Duhawks broke away and claimed the set 25-19. The third set saw Loras get out in front 11-3 and 23-10 on its way to a 25-13 set win.
Noah Furr (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Bishop Moore) led with eight kills and five digs. Aiden Kranz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy HS) had 10 assists.
