LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph women's soccer team hosted Virginia State University in its home opener Wednesday evening, securing a 2-1 victory. The WildCats led early in the first half, setting the match's tone.
Junior Ellie O'Connell scored the first goal of the game in the 2nd minute putting the WildCats up 1-0. Randolph's persistent offense in the first half later resulted in a goal from senior Sterlyn Woodward, assisted by first-year Holly Bermingham, for a 2-0 WildCat advantage.
In the second half, the Trojans got on the board at 52:42 when Loryn Srurgis sent a shot to the right-back corner of the net past junior WildCat keeper Rachel Fields to narrow the score 2-1.Â
Both teams showcased solid defense in the second half but Randolph held on to its 2-1 lead as the minutes wound down. Fields recorded nine saves and played the full 90 minutes in her debut with the WildCats.
Randolph registered 10 shots with five shots on goal, while the Trojans led with 16 shots, 10 on goal and corner kicks were also in Virginia State's favor, 9-1.Â
The WildCats hit the road Saturday to face the Pacers of William Peace University at 2:30 p.m.
