WINCHESTER, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball team travelled to Shenandoah on Friday to take on the Hornets in ODAC play. The WildCats won the first set and after trailing 2-1 in the match, came back to win the fourth and fifth sets and held off SU 3-2.
Randolph took control early on in the first set as it led 5-2. Shenandoah came back with a huge 8-0 run to go up 10-5. The SU lead grew to 14-6. Trailing 16-8, the 'Cats rattled off six straight points to close to within two points at 16-14. The Hornets pushed ahead 21-16 but Randolph closed to within a point at 24-23. The WildCats, however, forced three straight attack errors to come back and win 26-24.
The WildCats led 6-4 in the second set until the Hornets went on a 9-2 run to go up 13-8. Randolph eventually tied the frame at 13-all. SU forged ahead and was able to keep ahead of the WildCats as they won the set 25-20.
Randolph had leads of 13-9 and 15-13 in the third set. Shenandoah briefly held a lead but the WildCats went up 21-20 on kills by Jillian Warter (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County HS), Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian), and Tahani Villines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) along with a service ace by Kailee Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville). The momentum, however, swung back to the home team as SU scored the five points of the set to win 25-21.
The Hornets led 13-10 in the fourth set and were up 18-14. Randolph roared out in front thanks to a 7-0 run that gave it a 21-18 lead. The Hornets tried to rally but Murdock's kill at 24-23 gave the WildCats the set win and forced a deciding fifth set.
In the final set, Shenandoah went ahead 7-4. The WildCats crept ahead holding a 12-11 advantage. SU tied at 12-12 but a pair of attack error by the Hornets and a kill by Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) completed the comeback for the 'Cats and gave them the victory.
Villines led the way with 16 kills. Murdock added 14 kills, seven total blocks, and six digs. Warter finished with 11 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) chipped in 18 digs and 19 assists. Turner also had 19 assists. Abby Maldonado (High Point, N.C./Penn Griffin SOTA) had 10 digs.
Randolph will play Wilson College tomorrow afternoon. Match time from Chambersburg, Pa. will be at 1:00 p.m.
