FREDERICKSBURG, VA.- The Randolph softball traveled north to Mary Washington to face the Eagles in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles claimed both games winning the first contest 9-6 and the second game 8-4.
In the first game, Randolph took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Maddie Carroll's (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) two-run single scored Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) and Dominque Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County).
UMW tied it up in the third inning and then took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. In the WildCat fifth inning, an Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) groundout to shortstop scored one run and Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) singled to bring home another run. A passed ball let Michaela Williams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) score from third base. Chesney Shook (Advance, N.C./Davie County HS) singled to score Hawkins and give the WildCats a 6-5 lead.
Mary Washington tied it up in their portion of the fifth. In the Eagle sixth, UMW scored three runs to go up 9-6 where the score stood in the end.
Morris got the start in the circle for Randolph. She allowed eight runs (two earned) on eight hits, walking seven, and striking out one.
Hawkins was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a RBI. Shook went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Carroll batted 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lucado was 1-for-3 with two runs scored as was Irving.
In the second game, Mary Washington led 2-0 after the first inning. The Eagles scored once in the second inning to lead 3-0. In the Randolph third, Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) led off with a single. Irving tripled to bring McDermott home. Lucado's groundout scored Irving to make it 3-2.
A McDermott RBI single in the fourth inning tied the game at 3-3. The Eagles broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to lead 8-3. Randolph scored a run in the seventh inning on a Hawkins' RBI groundout but the WildCats get no closer as the Eagles won the game.
Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) pitched all six innings for the 'Cats. She surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits, walking seven, and striking out three.
McDermott was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, stolen base, two runs scored, and a RBI. Irving hit 3-for-4 with a double, triple, one run scored, and one RBI. Rachel Arce (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Randolph begins ODAC play on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
