Women’s Volleyball Rallies to Defeat Mary Washington 3-2

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball team hosted the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match. The WildCats trailed 2-0 but came back to defeat the Eagles by the score of 3-2 (14-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-7).

The victory evens Randolph's overall record at 13-13. It is the first win for the 'Cats over the Eagles since 2013 and the first at home since 1985. UMW drops to 12-14 overall on the season.

The WildCats had the early lead on the Eagles in the first set as they went ahead 5-1. Mary Washington came back to score five straight points to go up 7-5. With the score standing at 10-8, UMW went on an 11-1 run to jump ahead 21-9. The deficit was too much for Randolph to overcome as the Eagles claimed the set 25-14.

In the second set, the teams traded off points in the early going until UMW moved ahead 9-5. It was again a 10-8 advantage for the visitors as they broke away with a 6-0 run to go up 16-8. The WildCats cut into their deficit as they closed to within three points at 22-19. Mary Washington scored the last three points to take the set 25-19.

Randolph took an 8-3 lead in the third set. With the score knotted at 9-9, the WildCats went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 15-10. The lead grew to 20-13 but UMW was able to make it a 22-18 score. Randolph got a kill by Jillian Warter (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County HS) and two Eagle attack errors to win the set 25-18.

In the fourth set, Mary Washington was ahead 11-8 but the 'Cats put up a 5-0 run to go up 13-11. The Eagles wrestled the lead back at 15-13 and still led 19-17. Another 5-0 run by Randolph gave it a 22-19 advantage. The Eagles got to within one point of tying at 24-23 but an attack error by Emily Flamm gave the WildCats the winning point to take the set 25-23.

In the deciding fifth set, both teams exchanged points and the score was tied at 5-5. Randolph broke away with a 7-0 run to take a commanding 12-5 lead. It was not enough for the Eagles to overcome as the WildCats stayed ahead and won the 15-7 to claim the match.

Warter led the 'Cats with 12 kills and added seven digs. Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) chipped in 11 kills and three total blocks. Jamie Galinis (Greenville, N.C./DH Conley) put up nine kills. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) led in assists with 20 while Kailee Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) had 16. Domenech also had three service aces. McKayla Padgett (Amherst, Va./Amherst County HS) had a team-high 16 digs, Tahani Villines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) finished with 15 digs, and Abby Maldonado (High Point, N.C./Penn-Griffin SOTA) contributed 13 digs.

The WildCats return to ODAC play on Tuesday night when they host Ferrum. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
