LYNCHBURG, Va. - In a game defined by a scoreless first-half and tight defensive plays, Randolph College Women's Soccer fell to Roanoke, 2-1.
Both teams battled intensely throughout the match. The opening 45 minutes was scoreless as neither side could break through each other's defense. The Maroons outshot the WildCats 9-2 and with several scoring opportunities, the Maroons led 6-2 in corners in the first half. Continued pressure from both teams, offensively and defensively, kept the game in a deadlock at the end of the half.
The opening minutes of the second half remained scoreless as the WildCats and the Maroon's defense were not letting up. At the 80th-minute mark, Randolph netted the game's first goal off an assist from junior midfielder
Alana Ellis to a low kick from senior forward
Sterlyn Woodward. Two minutes later, Roanoke found the equalizer off a right foot kick from Rebecca Carr. Another offensive push from the Maroons a minute after their first goal pushed the team to a 2-1 advantage in the 83rd minute from a goal by Makayla Metzler, who was assisted by Brooke Nicholson.
Randolph attempted a late offensive surge but the comeback fell short as time ran out. The Maroons had 19 shots, eight on frame, to the WildCats' six shots, three on frame. Junior goalkeeper
Rachel Fields recorded six saves against the Maroons for a total of 39 saves on the season.
The 'Cats are back at WildCat Stadium on Saturday for a crosstown rival match against the University of Lynchburg at 2 p.m.
