Women’s Volleyball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan 3-0

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball team hosted ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at Giles Gymnasium. The Marlins had the upper hand on the WildCats as they would win the match 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 17-25).

Randolph's record drops to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC. The Marlins improve to 17-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

VWU took a 9-4 lead in the first set but Randolph went on an 8-2 run to go ahead 12-11. After the Marlins grabbed the lead back at 13-12, the 'Cats would regain their lead at 15-13. Randolph led at 21-19 but Virginia Wesleyan came storming back with four consecutive kills to go up 23-21. The WildCats got to within a point twice at 23-22 and 24-23 but Brooklyn Finnerty's (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) attack error gave the Marlins the final point to win the set.

The WildCats hung with the Marlins in the early portion of the second set but VWU pulled ahead to go up 17-10. Randolph rallied with an 8-0 run to erase its deficit and lead 18-17. Va. Wes went on its own 8-0 run down the stretch to pull away and win the frame 25-18.

Randolph led 9-7 in the third set but a 12-3 run by the visitors staked them to a 19-12 advantage. VWU stayed out in front the rest of the way as it won the frame 25-17.

Jillian Warter (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County HS) led the team with six kills. McKayla Padgett (Amherst, Va./Amherst County HS) led in digs with 12 and Abby Maldonado (High Point, N.C./Penn-Griffin SOTA) added 10 digs. Kailee Turner's (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) 10 assists were a team-high. Finnerty and Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) both had four block assists with Finnerty adding two solo blocks.

Randolph travels to Washington and Lee on Friday. Match time from Lexington will be at 6:00 p.m.
