Second Half Burst Leads Men’s Soccer to Victory over Guilford

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team hosted Guilford in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening at WildCat Stadium. The WildCats trailed 2-1 in the second half but rattled off five unanswered goals to come out with a 5-2 win over the Quakers.

Randolph improves its overall record to 3-2-2 and 2-0-1 in the ODAC. Guilford drops to 2-6-1 and 0-2-1 in conference place.

It was Guilford that got on the board first as Riley Copeland scored the first of his two goals on the night at 12:21. Randolph did not wait long to even the match up as Brian Kuhl (Gissen Germany/James Monroe) assisted Tucker Leverone (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) on the score just over a minute alter. Copeland would give the Quakers the lead with his second tally in the 23rd minute.

In the early portion of the second half, the WildCats came out with several shot attempts and three coming on frame. Leverone's shot at 55:03 bounced off the crossbar. Randolph got the goal it was looking for as Kumayle Merchant (Mumbai, India/St. Andrews School) connected on his first career goal in 57:51 to tie the game at 2-2. The WildCats took the lead for good just under three minutes later when Isaac Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) assisted on Gavin Leverette's (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) score.

Randolph wasn't finished. In the 75th minute. Paul Simmons (Manassas, Va./Charles J Colgan HS) netted his first career goal off an assist from Colby Lambert (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) to make it 4-2 'Cats. Leverette scored his second goal of the night assisted by Leverone. The game was well in hand when Thomas Sepulveda (King George, Va./Stafford) got in on the action with his first career goal in the 87th minute.

Guilford got off three consecutive shots 45 seconds apart to try to cut into the Randolph lead but Zach Miles (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) stopped all three to stymie the Quaker attack. There was a total of 24 shots in the second half with Randolph holding a 14-10 edge.
