LYNCHBURG, Va.- The conditions were less than ideal for a men's soccer game on Saturday evening as Randolph hosted Randolph-Macon at a very rainy WildCat Stadium. Randolph took a lead late in the first half while the Yellow Jackets netted the equalizer in the second period as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.
Randolph's record is now 2-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon's record is 3-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference.
The 'Jackets dominated in shots 9-2 in the first half. Randolph took advantage of a misplay by Yellow Jacket keeper Zach Fontentot as he came out to contest a ball but Taylor Jones (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) came up simultaneously and forced a shot into an empty net that went in with under a minute remaining in the period as Randolph held a 1-0 lead at the break.
Randolph had one shot on goal less than five minutes into the second period. In the 53rd minute, Wiley Eubank passed to Dylan Mathey who was able to sneak a shot past WildCat keeper Carter Kelly (Carrollton, Va./Smithfield) to knot the contest at 1-1.
The WildCats had several scoring chances to take the lead. Brian Kuhl (Gissen, Germany/James Monroe) and Otto Fox (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) had back-to-back shots in the 70th minute from the bottom center turned away. Fox had another chance in the 74th minute but his shot attempt went up and over the crossbar.
Randolph doubled up on Randolph-Macon in shots in the second half 10-5. Overall, the Yellow Jackets led in shots 14-12. The WildCats, however, had a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Kelly finished the night with six saves. Fontenot stopped nine shots for the 'Jackets.
The WildCats are home again on Wednesday as they host Guilford. Game time will be at 7:00 following the women's game.
