Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Second Half Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer to 3-2 Comeback win at N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.- The Randolph women's soccer team traveled down to North Carolina for the second straight game as the WildCats faced off against North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon. Trailing 2-1 late in the second period, the 'Cats scored a pair of goals minutes apart to complete the comeback and win 3-2.

The victory improves Randolph's overall record to 5-1 which matches it's start from 2018. It is just the second win in program history for Randolph over the Battling Bishops and the first since 1983. Today's game was the first meeting between the two schools since 2016.

The WildCats took the lead in the first half as Sterlyn Woodward (Madison, Va./Madison County) beat out a defender and was able to score to put Randolph on top 1-0 just 5:28 into the period. The score remained that way for the rest of the half despite the 'Cats putting four shots on frame.

In the second half, the Battling Bishops knotted the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute. Four minutes later, a free kick by Samantha Dell went over the head of Randolph keeper Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) and in to give NCWU a 2-1 lead.

The WildCats continued to attack looking to tie the contest up. N.C. Wesleyan goalkeeper Anna Yeakey turned away three Randolph goal opportunities. Finally, in the 85th minute, Madison Booker (Norfolk, Va./Granby) took a shot that Yeakey put her hands on but the ball went over her head, past the line, and in to give the WildCats the game-tying goal they were looking for at 84:44.

With some new life, the 'Cats were not done.  Following a corner kick attempt by Alana Ellis (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), the ball found its way to the middle where a Randolph shot attempt was saved by Yeakey and came down after hitting the crossbar where Joanne Torres (North Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) tapped in the rebound for the game-winning goal.

Randolph led in total shots 16-12 and 13-5 in shots on goal. Yeakey ended up with 10 saves on the day. Bossi came away with three saves.

The WildCats return home to begin conference play on Saturday as they host Averett. Game time from WildCats Stadium will be at 4:00 p.m.
