LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Averett in the WildCats' ODAC opener on Tuesday evening at Giles Gymnasium. The 'Cats went four sets with the Cougars but Averett came out on the winning end 3-1 (25-13, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23)
Randolph's record drops to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Averett improves to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC.
Averett led 6-2 early in the first set. Its lead grew to 17-9 and 20-10. Randolph closed to 20-12 but the Cougars outscored the WildCats 5-1 down the stretch to win the set 25-13.
AU scored the first five points of the second set to lead 5-0. The Cougar lead was still five points at 9-4 but the 'Cats rallied to close the gap to 9-8. Averett rattled off five more points to jump ahead 14-8. The WildCats would get as close as four points at 19-15 but Averett went on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-17 and go ahead 2-0 in the match.
The third frame saw Randolph fall behind 19-13. The WildCats went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. AU grabbed the lead back at 22-21 but the 'Cats edged ahead 23-22. Averett tied at 23-23 but a kill by Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) followed by a Cougar attack error gave Randolph the last two points it needed to win the set 25-23.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle at times. The WildCats held a 20-19 lead but Averett pushed ahead 22-20. The teams exchanged points until Averett registered the last one at match point to win 25-23 and take the match.
Tahani Villines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) registered nine kills, three blocks and three digs and hit .348 on the night. Finnerty added eight kills and four block assists. Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) laid down seven kills, seven total blocks, and eight digs. Gracie Fulton (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) led in digs with 15. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) added 12 digs, 10 assists, and two service aces. Izzy Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Peninsula Catholic) finished with 14 assists.
Randolph travels to Ferrum on Friday. Match time is at 6:30 p.m.
