Men’s Soccer Wins Home Opener 2-0 Over Mary Baldwin

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team hosted Mary Baldwin on Friday at WildCat Stadium in the season opener for both teams. The game was scoreless at halftime but the 'Cats scored twice in the second period on their way to a 2-0 victory.

The win also marks the first for Randolph head coach Sheldon Blue in his regular season debut.

The WildCats had three shots in the first half with one coming on frame. The defense kept the Fighting Squirrels off balance as it held Mary Baldwin without a shot attempt.

In the second half, the period was just over a minute in when a foul was called on Mary Baldwin inside of the Randolph penalty area. Tucker Leverone (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River), in his return to the field after a one-year hiatus, was called on to take the penalty kick and hit the shot past the diving Fighting Squirrels keeper and in to put the WildCats on the board and give them a 1-0 lead.

Neither team could generate much momentum for the remainder of the contest as Randolph kept Mary Baldwin at bay. With time winding down in the period, Anelka Ngoy (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) broke free and was able to beat Mary Baldwin keeper Preston Bentley one-on-one as he softly kicked the ball into the back of the net to put the WildCats up 2-0 for the final score.

Overall, Randolph held an 8-2 advantage in total shots and 4-2 in shots on goal. There were just three total corner kicks in the game with the WildCats holding a 2-1 advantage.
WildCat goalie Carter Kelly (Carrollton, Va./Smithfield) secured the shutout with a pair of saves. Bentley and starter Tucker Speak both tallied a pair of saves for MBU.

The WildCats head on the road on Sunday as they face Methodist. Game time from Fayetteville, N.C. will be at 6:00 p.m.
