LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team made the short trip across town to the University of Lynchburg as they faced the Hornets in an ODAC doubleheader on Wednesday. Randolph won the first game 4-1 while Lynchburg was the winner of the second game 5-2.
Randolph's overall record now stands at 16-10 and 4-2 in the ODAC.
In the first game, the WildCats got out to the lead early.
Delaney Nuckols' (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) sac fly scored a run and
Kylie Stark's (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) sac fly scored another to make it 2-0 in the first inning.
The Hornets got one run across home plate in the fifth inning. The WildCat scored once in the sixth and seventh innings.
Starting pitcher
Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) kept the Hornets at bay through five innings. She allowed one run on three hits, walked one, and struck out one.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in relief for the last two innings. She gave up just one hit, walked one, and struck out two.
Taryn Campbell (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) was 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and stole a base.
In the second game, Randolph again got out to an early lead, Stark reached first on a throwing error by the Hornet shortstop that allowed Lucado and
Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) to score to put the WIldCats ahead 2-0 in the first inning.
Lynchburg responded with a three-run bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. Randolph left three runners on base in the fourth inning as it looked to grab the lead back. The Hornets scored once in the second and fifth innings.
Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) pitched four innings in the circle. She allowed five runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out one.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) came in for the last two innings. She gave up just one hit and one walk.
Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double. Irving went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Lucado was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Randolph is back home on Saturday as it hosts Averett. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12:00 p.m.
