LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Shenandoah in In ODAC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The WildCats shutout the Hornets in both games as they swept SU with scores of 4-0 and 6-0. It is Randolph's first sweep of Shenandoah since 2017.
The wins improve Randolph's overall record to 18-10 and 6-2 in the ODAC. Shenandoah falls to 8-18 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
The first game was scoreless until the third inning.
Taryn Campbell's (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst Count) single scored a run and
Kyle Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) reached on an error by the Hornets leftfielder to give Randolph a 2-0 lead.
The WildCats plated another pair of runs in the sixth inning on a
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) sac fly and
Delaney Nuckols' (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) RBI single.
Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) went the distance in the circle for the 'Cats. She pitched all seven innings and allowed five hits. She struck out three.
Nuckols was 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base, a run scored, and a RBI. Campbell went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Brooke Rolocut (King George, Va./King George) and
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) both had pinch hit singles and a run scored.
In the second game, Randolph struck early. With the bases loaded,
Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) singled to bring home a run. A wild pitch a few batters later allowed Lucado to score.
In the third inning, McDermott reached first on an error and advanced to second base which allowed Nuckols and Lucado to score and made it 4-0 Randolph. The WildCats added to their lead in the sixth inning on a Lucado RBI double to left and Nuckols' RBI Â single.
It was a combined shutout for Randolph in the circle.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) got the win as she allowed just one hit through four innings. She walked two and struck out three.
Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More) came in for the last three innings surrendering just one hut and a walk.
Lucado went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles, three runs scored, one RBI, and one stole base. Nuckols was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, one run scored, and one RBI.
Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) hit 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Campbell and McDermott were both 1-for-3.
Randolph travels to defending conference champion and current #10 in the nation Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Game 1 from Virginia Beach is at 1:00 p.m.
