Softball Drops Doubleheader to #10 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The Randolph softball team hit the road for the first of two weekend away ODAC doubleheaders on Saturday as the WildCats faced #10 Virginia Wesleyan. The defending conference champion Marlins won both games by scores of 11-3 and 4-1.

The losses drop Randolph's overall record to 18-12 and 6-4 in the conference. Virginia Wesleyan improves to 23-7 and 7-3 in the ODAC.

In the first game, the Marlins scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning to go ahead 10-0. The WildCats scored two runs, both on a wild pitch, in the top of the fourth. Delaney Nuckols' (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) RBI single in the WildCats' fifth inning made it 10-3. VWU ended the game with one run in the sixth inning.

Nuckols was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and a RBI. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) went 1-for-3.

Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) pitched 2 1/3 innings in the circle. She surrendered eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and walked one. Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in relief for the final three innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits.

In the second game, Randolph took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) sac fly that scored Brooke Rolocut (King George, Va./King George). The Marlins took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom portion of the inning. Virginia Wesleyan would go on to add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Starting pitcher Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) went 4.2 innings in the circle. She allowed two runs on four hits and walked three. Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief. She gave up two runs on three hits.

Nuckols and Rolocut were both 1-for-3 at the plate with Rolucut scoring a run. Both also stole a base.

Randolph heads to Ashland tomorrow for an ODAC matchup with #9 Randolph-Macon. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
