Softball Falls to #9 Randolph-Macon in ODAC Doubleheader

ASHLAND, Va.- The Randolph softball team played #9 Randolph-Macon in an ODAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The WildCats were edged out by the Yellow Jackets in both games as Randolph-Macon won 2-1 in eight innings in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2.

Randolph's overall record is now 18-14 and 6-6 in conference play.

It was a pitcher's duel in the first game between Randolph's Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) and Randolph-Macon's Gracie Ellis. It was scoreless between the two teams through seven innings of play. The WildCats struck first win with one run scored in the top of the eighth inning on a Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) RBI groundout. Randolph-Macon would tie it up in its portion of the eighth and scored the winning run on a fielder's choice.

Morris pitched six innings in the circle for the WildCats. She allowed four hits, two walks, and struck out two. Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) came in for 1 1/3 innings. She gave up two unearned runs on one hit.

Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) had Randolph's only hit of the game as she went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

In the second game, the 'Jackets scored twice in the first inning and three more times in the second inning to go ahead 5-0. Randolph clawed its way back in the third inning. With one out and runners on first and second, McDermott singled to bring a run home. One batter later, Taryn Campbell (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) laced a single into left field to allow two runs to score and make it 5-3.

In the fifth inning with two outs, McDermott doubled to center field. Campbell singled to score McDermott and the WildCats were within one run of tying at 5-4. The WildCats left three runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings combined to come up short in their comeback bid.

Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) went 1 2/3 innings in the circle for the 'Cats. She allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits. She walked two batters. Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in for the final 4 1/3 innings. She surrendered just two hits and struck out one.

Campbell was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. McDermott went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
