LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Guilford on Wednesday afternoon for an ODAC doubleheader. The WildCats took the first game 1-0 while the Quakers held off a Randolph rally in the second game to win 4-3 in the second game.
Randolph's overall record now stands at 19-15 and its conference is 7-7.
The first game's only run came in the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on second base,
Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) singled up the middle to allow
Michaela Williams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) to score.
Starting pitcher
Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) was nearly perfect in her seven innings in the circle. She allowed one hit, a single in the sixth inning, and struck out one.
Randolph collected a total of eight hits. Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and
Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) both had doubles.
In the second game, Guilford scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Quakers scored once in the third inning and once in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-0.
Randolph got one run in the bottom of the sixth.
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) was caught stealing second base but Walch took off and scored on the play to make it a 4-1 game. In the WildCat seventh, McDermott scored on a fielding error by the Quaker right fielder. Hawkins singled up the middle to score
Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) and get the WildCats to within a run of tying the game up. With runners on second and third, Lucado was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Delaney Nuckols' (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) pop out to third base, however, ended the game.
Scruggs pitched five innings in the circle. She allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked one, and struck out one.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in for two innings of relief. She gave up two hits, walked one, and struck out two.
Lucado was 2-for-3 as was
Charlize Taylor (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge). Hawkins and Walch were both 1-for-1.
Randolph faces Roanoke on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Botetourt Sports Complex in Troutville.
