Softball Splits Home Doubleheader with Averett

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Averett in an ODAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars won the first game 10-2 while the WildCats rebounded to take Game 2 7-1.

Randolph's overall record improves to 20-16 overall and 8-8 in the conference. It is the WildCats' first 20-win season since 2017 when the team won 24 games.

In the second game, Randolph jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on Taryn Campbell's (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) two-run double. Dominique Irving's (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) two-run triple in the second inning made it 4-0 'Cats and a Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) RBI groundout pushed the Randolph lead to 5-0.

Campbell tripled in the fifth inning to give the WildCats a 6-0 advantage. A McDermott groundout scored Campbell in that inning.

Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pitched all seven innings in the circle for Randolph. She allowed one run on four hits, walked four, and struck out three.

Campbell was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple, and one RBI. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Irving went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Charlize Taylor (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) batted 1-for-3 with a run scored.

In the first game, Randolph fell behind 4-0 after four innings. In the bottom half of the fourth, Brooke Rolocut (King George, Va./King George) smacked a double to centerfield to score a run and get the WildCats on the board. In the fifth inning. Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) led off with a single and Irving singled to put runners on first and second. After Lucado fled out, Morris pinch hit and singled to load the bases. Campbell was hit by a pitch to score Oetken as the 'Cats cut the Averett lead to two runs at 4-2.

The Cougars blew the game open with a four-run sixth inning to lead 8-2. AU scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

Olesia Walch (Raleigh N.C./St. Thomas More) took the loss in the circle for the WildCats. She pitched 3 2/3 innings and surrendered four runs on six hits. She walked three and struck out two. Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in for 1 2/3 innings. She also gave up four runs on six hits. She walked one. Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) pitched 1 2/3 innings. She gave up two runs on two hits and walked two.

Rolocut finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a RBI. McDermott went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

Randolph hosts its regular season home finale this Sunday against Ferrum. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
