LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Ferrum in the WIldCats' final home doubleheader of the season on Saturday afternoon. Both games were decided by one run as the Panthers took the first game 5-4 in nine innings and the WildCats rebounded to win 5-4 in Game 2.
Randolph's overall record stands at 21-17 overall and 9-9 in the ODAC.
In the first game, Ferrum got on the board in the third inning on a Lyndsey Sears solo homerun. Randolph responded in their half of the inning as
Taryn Campbell's (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) sac fly scored a run to even the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning. Campbell was hit by a pitch to lead off.
Brooke Rolocut (King George, Va./King George) reached on a fielder's choice which got pinch runner
Alexa Tretola (Morrisville, N.C./Panther Creek) out at second.
Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) walked.
Charlize Taylor (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) then singled down the right field line and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Panther second baseman which allowed McDermott and Rolocut to score and put Randolph ahead 3-1.
Ferrum rallied to tie the game up with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Both teams would score once in the eighth inning to force a ninth inning. In the Ferrum ninth, Sears doubled to right centerfield to score one run and put FC ahead. In the Randolph ninth, the WildCats had runners on second and third with no outs.
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) grounded out to the pitcher and
Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) popped into a double play to end the game.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pitched 4 1/3 innings in the circle for the WildCats. She allowed one run on three hits, walked four, and struck out three Panthers.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in relief for 4 2/3 innings. She gave up four unearned runs on three shits and walked one batter.
Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) and Nuckols were both 2-for-5 at the plate. Nuckols stole a pair of bases. Taylor was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) was also 2-for-4 at the plate.
Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, Ferrum scored once as Randolph starter
Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) walked a batter with the bases loaded. In the Wildcat fourth, McDermott walked to lead off. Campbell singled to move McDermott to third base and scored on a wild pitch. Hawkins singled to advance Campbell to third base.
Mackenzie Eggers (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) walked. Taylor reached on a fielding error by the Ferum centerfielder which allowed Campbell to score to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead. Irving singled to left field to score two runs. A Nuckols bunt single and error on the Panther pitcher scored Taylor. A Lucado pop up scored Irving and the Randolph lead was now 6-1.
Ferrum scored once in fifth inning and then added four runs in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. The Panthers had runners on the corners with one out in the seventh inning but
Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More) got a strikeout and fly out to center field to end the top portion of the inning.
In the WildCat seventh, McDermott walked to lead off. Campbell flied out to right field.
Michaela Williams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) walked.
Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) pinched hit a single to left field to bring McDermott home and win the game for the WildCats.
 Scruggs pitched 5 1/3 innings in the circle for the WildCats. She gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits, walked four, and struck out two. Walch got the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed just one hit, one walk, and struck out two.
Campbell was 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored. Irving and Nuckols were both 2-for-4 with Irving scoring a run and Nuckols stealing two bases. Hawkins went 1-for-2 with a run scored. McDermott scored two runs.
Randolph concludes the regular season on Monday with a rescheduled doubleheader against Roanoke. The games will take place at the Botetourt Sports Complex in Troutville, Va. Game 1 starts at 5:00 p.m.
