Volleyball Drops Home Finale to EMU 3-2

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday evening at Giles Gymnasium in the WildCats' regular season home finale. The match went to five sets but the Royals came out on top as they defeated the WildCats 3-2 (27-25, 27-25, 20-25, 17-25, 10-15).

In the first set, Randolph led 7-3 one point. The Royals came back to tie several times. Trailing 15-13, EMU went on a 9-2 run to go ahead 22-17. The WildCats clawed their way back with a 7-1 run to lead 24-23. Both teams would match each other point for point. With the set tied at 25-25, a kill and service ace by Tahani Villines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) gave Randolph the two points it needed to win the set.

The Royals led 9-5 in the second set. A 5-1 Randolph run tied the frame at 10-10. EMU pushed ahead 19-15. Randolph tallied three straight points to make it 19-18. EMU went out in front 24-18 and was a point away from tying the match up. The WildCats prevented that with a 9-1 run to close out the Royals and win the set by a 27-25 score.

Randolph led 2-0 in third set until EMU rattled off five straight points to jump ahead 5-2. The WildCats took a brief 7-6 lead until the Royals came back to lead 12-10. EMU started to pull away late leading 20-16. The Royals would hold off the WildCats and win 25-20.

Both teams battled it out in the fourth set early on with neither sustaining a long run. The score stood at 17-15 in EMU's favor. An 8-2 Eastern Mennonite run propelled the Royals to a 25-17 set win to force a deciding fifth set.

The final set saw the Royals get out ahead 6-2 but the WildCats chipped away to knot the score at 7-7. EMU scored four straight points to lead 11-7. Randolph got as close as two points from tying but it was not enough as EMU stayed out in front in the end to win the set and match.

Murdock added six total blocks (four assisted, two solo).  Villines totaled nine digs and one block assist.
