LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph and Washington and Lee men's soccer teams squared off against each other at a damp WildCat Stadium on Saturday evening. The WildCats held the lead for nearly 46 minutes of game time but the Generals scored with under six minutes remaining to force a 1-1 tie.
For Randolph, it is the first positive regular season result against the Generals since a 1-1 tie in Lexington in 2014. The WildCats' overall record stands at 4-4-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the ODAC while the Generals record now stands at 8-2-4 overall and 6-1-1 in the conference.
The WildCats got on the scoreboard on just their second shot of the game in the first period. Jayden Buckles (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) fed a pass down to Brian Kuhl (Gissen, Germany/James Monroe) in the middle and Kuhl headed it in to give Randolph the 1-0 lead. Washington and Lee had a pair of shots in the period that sailed over the crossbar.
The Generals had eight corner kicks overall and the WildCats defended them all expect for one. That came in the 85th minute when a corner kick by W&L's Lucas Pleasant found PJ Ryan who headed the ball in past Randolph keeper Carter Kelly (Carrollton, Va./Smithfield) to knot the contest at 1-1.
Washington and Lee dominated in shots 16-5 and held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Randolph's defense stood firm throughout the game as it constantly stopped any General threat.
Kelly finished with four saves in goal for the WildCats. His counterpart for the Generals, Will Joseph, had just one save.
Randolph will play at Roanoke on Wednesday night. Game time from Salem, Va. will be at 7:00 p.m.
