LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Shenandoah on Friday evening at Giles Gymnasium. The match went to four sets and no set was decided by more than four points as the WildCats defeated the Hornets 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21).
Randolph improves its record to 11-10 overall and 3-6 in the ODAC. Shenandoah drops to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
In the first set, Randolph recorded a service ace to start off but the Hornets rattled off five straight points to lead 5-1. Trailing 8-4, the WildCats used a 6-2 run to knot the set at 10-10. SU pushed ahead by three first at 13-10 and then 17-14. The 'Cats tallied four straight points to go ahead 18-17 but the Hornets used a 5-0 run to go ahead 22-18. In the end, Randolph rallied with a 7-1 run to take over SU and win the set 25-23.
The WildCats started off the second set ahead by the score of 7-4. Shenandoah took back the lead as it went up 10-8. The two teams exchanged leads. Holding a one-point lead at 17-16, the WildCats went on a 6-2 run to lead 23-18. Shenandoah was able to close to within two points at 23-21 and at 24-22 but Randolph was able to get the last point it needed to win the set 25-22.
The WildCats held a 9-5 lead in the third set. SU rattled off a 7-0 run to grab a 12-9 lead. The 'Cats responded with a run of their own, 7-1, to retake the lead at go up 16-13. SU tied it up at 16-all but Randolph retook the lead at 19-16. Randolph led 22-20 but Shenandoah closed out the frame on a 5-0 run to win 25-22.
The Hornets led 8-4 in the fourth set and were ahead 12-9 until Randolph let out a 5-0 run to go up 14-12. The Hornets briefly held a lead at 17-16 but the 'Cats grabbed the advantage back. The set was tied at 20-20. Randolph picked up momentum in the end as it closed out the Hornets with a 5-1 run to win the frame 25-21.
Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) led the way offensively for the WildCats with 11 kills to go with three block assists. Tahani Villines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) and Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) both laid down nine kills each with Murdock finishing with five solo blocks and two block assists. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) totaled 18 assists and Izzy Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Peninsula Catholic) 17 assists with the two accumulating seven service aces on the night. Gracie Fulton (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) had 23 digs. Domenech chipped in 13 digs and Villines 12 digs.
Randolph travels to North Carolina Wesleyan tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. match against the Battling Bishops. The WildCats will also play Greensboro at 4:00 p.m.
