Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team traveled to Shenandoah for a Friday night match against the Hornets. The two teams battled it out for five sets with SU coming out with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 25-27, 25-22, 15-7) victory.

The loss drops the WildCats' record to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Hornets even their record at 7-7 and improve to 3-2 in the ODAC.

The WildCats started off strong as they got out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. Shenandoah responded with a run of its own to go up 7-6. Randolph grabbed the lead back at 9-7. The 'Cats would increase their advantage to 17-11. They would go on to stay out in front for the remainder of the set as they took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Shenandoah led at one point 7-5 but Randolph came back to grab the lead away and go on top 10-7. After SU regained the lead and the WildCats tied at 14-14, the Hornets used an 11-0 run to come away with a 25-14 set win and evened the match.

Shenandoah's momentum carried over into the third set as it go out to a 5-0 lead. Randolph rallied to cut into its deficit and an 8-3 run gave it a 15-13 lead. The lead would change hands four times. SU led 23-21 but three straight blocks by Randolph gave the WildCats a 24-23 advantage. The Hornets inched ahead 25-24 but the 'Cats used a pair of kills by Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) and an attack error on Shenandoah to outlast the Hornets and take the set 27-25.

Trailing 9-5 in the fourth set, Randolph used a 13-4 run to lead 18-13. Four straight points by SU closed the score to 18-17. The WildCats pushed ahead 21-18 but three points by the Hornets tied the set at 21-all. A kill by Nikki Hurt (Cartersville, Va./Cumberland) gave the 'Cats a 22-21 lead but Shenandoah closed out Randolph with a 4-0 run to win the set and force a final deciding fifth set.

In the fifth set, the WildCats were behind 6-3. Shenandoah went on a five-point burst to leap ahead 11-3. Randolph tried to close its deficit but it was not enough as the Hornets took the frame and the match.

Finnerty led with 12 kills and nine total blocks. Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) added 12 kills and seven total blocks. Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) led in assists with 31. Vivianna Gustin (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) led in digs with 16 and service aces with four. Hurt chipped in 13 digs and seven kills. Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) contributed 12 digs. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) had a double-double effort of 11 assists and 10 digs. Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) finished with six assisted blocks, two kills, and two digs.

Randolph is back in action tomorrow at Eastern Mennonite. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
