STAUNTON, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team faced Mary Baldwin on Tuesday night. The WildCat defeated the Fighting Squirrels for the second time this season by a score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-8).
The WildCats improve their overall record to 8-4. Mary Baldwin falls to 1-13.
Mary Baldwin led 5-1 in the first set. Randolph came back to takes its first lead at 13-12. With the set tied at 16-all, the WildCats ended the set on a 9-3 run to take the frame and lead the match 1-0.
The WildCats continued their momentum into the second set as they got out ahead 7-1. The Fighting Squirrels came all the way back to tie at 7-7. The 'Cats went up 14-10 and eventually 17-11. Randolph ended the set on a 4-0 run to win and lead 2-0.
Randolph had leads of 7-3 and 10-6 in the third set. Mary Baldwin rallied to keep the set tight. Trailing 22-21, a kill by Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) and an attack error on Mary Baldwin put the WildCats at 23-22. The Fighting Squirrels, however, put up three straight points to win 25-23 and make it a 2-1 match.
The WildCats came out determined in the fourth set as they got out to a 7-1 lead. Mary Baldwin closed to 7-4 but Randolph was too much as it expanded its lead to 16-4 on the way to a dominating 25-8 win.
Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate), Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian), and Nikki Hurt (Cartersville, Va./Cumberland) all had seven kills to lead Randolph. Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) added six kills and five total blocks. Murdock finished with five total blocks. Madison Daniels (Warrenton, Va./Liberty) led in digs with nine with Cali Martin (Axton, Va./Carlisle) adding eight and Vivianna Gustin (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) seven. Jayda Domenech Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) put up 18 assists and Washington 12 assists. Ainsley Simmons (Fincastle, Va./James River) had a career-best five blocks.
Randolph returns to ODAC play on Friday as they face Washington and Lee. Match time is at 6:30 p.m.
