LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Regent University and Johnson and Wales on Saturday at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats came out victorious in both matches as they defeat the Royals 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, and 25-19) and JWU 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-21).
The wins lifts the WildCats' overall record to 7-4 on the season.
Against Regent, Randolph led 6-5 in the first set but broke away with a 6-1 run to lead 12-6. The Royals closed their deficit with a four-point burst to make it 12-10 but the WildCats went on a 9-3 run to go ahead 21-13 on their way to the set win.
The Royals scored the first two points of the second set and led at one point 6-5. Randolph countered with an 11-3 run to lead 16-9. Regent inched closer as it closed to 24-20. Randolph won the set on a Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) kill to put the exclamation point on another set victory.
Regent got ahead of the WildCats in the third frame as it was up 15-8. The WildCats stormed back to get to 15-13. The Royals improved their advantage to 18-13 and looked to pull away from the 'Cats. Randolph had other plans as a huge 11-0 run swung momentum to Randolph to give it a 24-18 advantage. Regent got a point to make it 24-19 but Brooklyn Finnerty's (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) kill ended any hope for a Royal comeback as the WildCats won the set and the match.
Finnerty led the way for Randolph with 12 kills and a .579 hitting percentage. Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) tallied 13 digs while Madison Daniels (Warrenton, Va./Liberty) added 12. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) picked up 16 assists and Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) 15 assists. Domenech also had three service aces.
Against Johnson and Wales, it was 6-4 early on but Randolph's 15-1 run put it on top 21-5. JWU could not chip away at its deficit as the WildCats easily claimed the set.
Johnson and Wales got out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. It was as much as four points at 12-8. The WildCats closed to 12-11. Randolph was able to get ahead 19-16 but JWU gained ground. JWU got to within one point of tying at 20-19 but Randolph broke ahead 24-19. Murdock again delivered the winning point with a kill to put the 'Cats ahead 2-0 in the match.
Randolph fell behind early on in the third set but was able to recover as it fought back JWU. Down 16-15, the WildCats battled back to lead 19-16. JWU took the lead back at 20-19 but again the 'Cats rallied to go up 24-20 and eventually won 25-21.
Finnerty, Murdock, and McGinnis led with nine kills each. Murdock hit .471 while Finnerty went .353. McGinnis led in digs again with 12. Vivianna Gustin (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) and Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) both chipped in 10 digs each and had two service aces. Washington led in assists with 15.
Randolph travels to Mary Baldwin on Tuesday. Game time in Staunton is at 7:00 p.m.
