Women’s Basketball Opens Season with 68-48 Win over Apprentice

LYNCHBURG, Va- The Randolph women's basketball team started its 2022-23 season on Tuesday as it hosted Apprentice. The WildCats outscored the Builders in all but one period as they won by the score of 68-48.

Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) scored the WildCats' first basket on a three that started a 10-0 run that gave Randolph a 10-1 advantage with 5:07 left in the first period. The Builders cut the Randolph lead to five points with a little over three minutes left but baskets by Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) and Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) lifted Randolph to a 14-5 lead left at the conclusion of the quarter.

The WildCats added to their lead in the second quarter. An 11-6 run in the period gave the 'Cats a halftime lead of 25-11.

Apprentice scored the first basket of the third quarter to make it 25-14 but Randolph got a three from O'Neil and a traditional three from Stark to go up 31-14 at the 8:17 mark. The Builders were able to cut the Randolph lead to 12 points with 1:44 remaining in the quarter but the WildCats used an 8-0 run to go ahead 49-29.

Both teams scored 19 points in the fourth quarter. Randolph had a lead by as much as 25 points, 58-33, with 6:48 left to play. The Builders cut the lead to 16 points but it was not enough to erode the WildCat advantage.

Overall, Randolph was 20-of-60 (33.3%) from the floor while Apprentice was 18-of-59 (30.5%). The Builders were just 1-of-16 (6.3%) from behind the three-point arc while the WildCats shot 5-of-24 (20.8%).

Stark finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing out five assists and coming away with two steals. Clark added 14 points. O'Neil chipped in 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and was 3-of-8 in three-point attempts. Nadia West (Monroe, Va./Amherst County) scored eight points.

Randolph goes on the road Saturday to Salem. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
