Women’s Hoops Defeats Salem 82-57

WINSTON-SALEM. N.C.- The Randolph women's basketball team embarked on its first road trip of the young season on Saturday as they travelled to the campus of Salem College. The WildCats continued their strong start to the year as they defeated the Spirit 82-57 to move to 2-0.

Randolph led 6-0 at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter. The Spirit closed to four points, 8-4, at 5:41, but the WildCats went on a 14-5 run to take a 22-9 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the period. Randolph would end up leading 29-13 at the conclusion of the quarter.

The WildCats started the second quarter hot as they scored eight straight points to up their lead to 37-13. Randolph's lead only dipped below 20 points twice as it continued to hold a sizable advantage and was ahead 52-28 at the break.

Randolph ended the third quarter with its biggest lead of the afternoon going ahead 70-37. Salem would outscore the WildCats 20-12 in the final period but it was not enough to chip away at its deficit as Randolph was firmly in control of the game.

The WildCats shot 28-of-56 from the floor (50%) and were 8-of-17 (47.1%) from behind the three-point arc. Salem was 18-of-40 (45%) overall but just 3-of-11 (27.3%) in three-point attempts.

Randolph led in points off turnovers 35-19, bench points 32-23, and points in the paint 30-22.

"We came out with great energy and focus," said head coach Steve Lanpher after the game.  "Offensively we really shared the ball & our pace & depth wore them down! We were led by Kylie's 15 pts & seven rebounds & Cam's 14 pts. Defensively, we did a nice job limiting their effectiveness especially through the first 3 quarters." 

Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) led the team with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She came down with seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and came away with two steals. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) added 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting with all four baskets three pointers. She also had three rebounds, three steals and one assist. Pariz Minor (Norview, Va./Norview) scored nine points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) scored nine points and dished out five assists. Simone Brown (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) had a team-high eight rebounds and scored five points. Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) finished with eight points.

The WildCats return home to start conference play on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater. Game time from Giles Gymnasium with be at 5:00 p.m.
