LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was a sunny but cold and brisk Tuesday afternoon as the Randolph women's soccer team hosted Randolph-Macon at WildCat Stadium. The Yellow Jackets scored the game's only goal in the 25th minute as they defeated the WildCats 1-0.
Randolph drops to 6-4-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon improves to 10-3-2 and 5-1-1 in the conference.
The Yellow Jacket goal came at 24:51. Riley Russ sent a deep shop to the top left corner of the goal over the outstretched hands of WildCat keeper Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) to put the visitors ahead.
Despite being outshot in both periods, Randolph got aggressive in the second half. Following a corner kick at 62:01, the WildCats had a couple of shots on goal coming from Hailey Coleman (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) and Bo Knight (Big Island, Va./Jefferson Forest) but both would be stopped by Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Erin Morris. Coleman had a later attempt stopped by Morris in the 78th minute.
The WildCats had one final opportunity to get the potential game-tying goal in the 90th minute. A foul called on the Yellow Jackets granted Randolph a free kick just outside of the box. Carlynne Wright's attempt, however, would be stopped by Morris.
Randolph-Macon had a slight 13-10 edge in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets led in corners 9-5.
Bossi finished with five saves on the day. Morris also had five saves for the 'Jackets.
The WildCats travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Game time will be at 4:30 p.m.
