Women’s Soccer Falls to Salem 2-1

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's soccer team hosted Salem (NC) on Wednesday evening following the completion of the men's game. The WildCats fell behind in the first half and saw their comeback fall short as they lost to the Spirit 2-1.

Salem took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. A corner by Anna Fretwell from the left side found Gina Franco who headed it into the right corner.

In the 33rd minute, Ellie Montes found herself on one on with Randolph keeper Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) after a misplay by a WildCat defender. Montes beat out Bossi and found an empty net for a 2-0 Spirit lead.

Randolph outshot Salem 8-3 in the second half as it looked to fight its way back into the game. The WildCats finally broke through as Sara Bane (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) was able get past a couple of Spirit defenders and get a shot off and into the left side of the net and in for the goal.

The WildCats had four shots on goal in the final 17 minutes but could not get the tying score it needed. Randolph would end up outshooting the Spirit 13-8 and have a slight 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

Bossi had four saves for the WildCats. Spirit keepers Alexcina Wartski and Jordan Tomberlin combined for seven saves on the night.

The WildCats travel to Staunton on Saturday to take on Mary Baldwin. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
