Torres’ OT Goal Gives Women’s Soccer 2-1 Win over EMU

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph women's soccer team hosted Eastern Mennonite in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Sunday evening. The WildCats won in overtime 2-1 over the Royals.

Randolph evens its record at 4-4 overall and is 1-0 in the ODAC. EMU falls it 2-4 and 0-1 in the conference.

The WildCats got a few shots on frame in the first half but were stymied by Royals goalkeeper Anna Filipkowski. It was a scoreless game at halftime.

Sterlyn Woodward (Banco, Va./Madison County) got the 'Cats on the board with her goal at 61:54. Randolph's defense tried to make it hold up. Alexi Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) came up with three key saves to keep the Royals off the scoreboard. EMU finally got the equalizer at 82:32 as Hannah York's corner kick found Samm Livermore who booted it in to tie the contest at 1-1.

Randolph had a chance at a game winner as time wound down in the half. Woodward got a shot off near the front of the goal but the attempt would glance off the crossbar and out of play.

In overtime, Woodward took the throw-in from the left side of the field. Her throw made it to the front of the goal as two Eastern Mennonite defenders came in. The ball made its way to Joanne Torres (North Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) who hit a shot past an outstretched Flipkowski and in for the game winner.

Randolph edged out EMU 12-9 in total shots. Both teams had five shots on goal. EMU led in corner kicks 5-4.

Bossi finished with four saves on the night. Filipowski had three saves for the Royals.

The WildCats travel to Roanoke on Wednesday. Game time will be at 4:30 p.m.
